What Else Have I Done?
Well, because I know lots of stuff, sometimes people ask me to share it.
A couple of times I've been asked to speak to people called students every week. This is called teaching, and I really enjoy it. Unfortunately, because I'm so busy doing other stuff, I don't have time just now to talk to students, but one day I might do it again.
The students I like best probably don't want to be designers, they want to be sculptors or painters, but they have to learn a little design just in case they change their minds.
Trying to make graphic design or typography interesting to these students is a real challenge, because shouting at them doesn't work. Giving them money works, but then a man called 'head of the department' says that's no use either, so you just have to think up other ways of getting them interested, which is the bit I like best.
Where did I learn all this stuff?
Well, I've been doing this for ages. This is my thirteenth year of Flying Solo. Before I did this, I worked for a design consultancy. I was called 'boss,' because I owned it. Before that, I worked for an ad agency, where I was called 'creative director,' because I was very creative and nearly always knew which direction I was facing.
I've done other stuff too. I used to write rubbish in hi-fi magazines. Now I do it here. So I've had lots of experience, and even though my brain is crammed with stuff, I haven't filled it up or worn it out yet. If I do wear it out, I'll give you all 30 days notice, so you'll know when to stop listening to me.
